on July 9, 2020I was inspired by the many tutorials and thought I would try to photograph using the bowl in the sink strategy like Brian Petersen. I first tried using sunlight because I have not yet invested in external flash devices. I had a difficult time focusing as the wind began to blow and move the water. Next stop was the sink with a dripping faucet. I worked with a red towel in the sink behind a clear bowl with a black back drop on the first day and still had a difficult time with the focus and with the interference of the lines in the bowl. Patience is a virtue with this project.
Day 2, I decided to use a aqua blue colored bowl which let more light into the water and I added a flashlight. I worked in "manual setting" and finally when I added some overhead light, I was beginning to get some clarity and focus. I resorted to shutter priority to increase the shutter speed and FINALLY caught the one in a million shot. I used the flash on the camera and a small LED flashlight.
I also tried mineral oil and some viscous hand sanitizer thinking it would make a heavier drop and bigger splash. Controlling the drip and the remote shutter release at the same time was difficult and both of those liquids make your water cloudy and messy. I resorted back to water and finally got a crown splash with some clear droplets suspended in the air. I regret not getting a star reflection on the drops.
